Malliotakis Applauds House Passage of Bill to Prevent Noncitizen Voting in U.S. Elections

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) applauded the House’s passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation that would require documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections and order states to set up a program to remove noncitizens from state voter rolls.

In a speech on the House Floor, Malliotakis highlighted actions New York City Democrats have taken to grant noncitizens the right to vote in municipal elections, including Local Law 11, which was passed in 2021 under Mayor Bill de Blasio and allowed to take effect in 2022 under Mayor Eric Adams who declined to veto the measure. Malliotakis has joined city and state leaders in filing a lawsuit to block the law from taking effect which has succeeded in court twice, however, the city continues to waste taxpayer dollars to appeal it. It would allow 800,000 noncitizens to vote in city elections so long as they’ve resided in New York City for 30 days and have a green card or work authorization.

“If anyone’s wondering why this legislation is needed, look no further than New York City where far-left Democrats are working overtime to allow noncitizens to vote in elections after residing in our city for a mere 30 days,” Malliotakis said. “The right to vote is a sacred right given only to United States citizens, and there is nothing more important than preserving the integrity of our political system. The passage of the SAVE Act today reaffirms our commitment to creating more trust in our elections, not less, and it’s a shame that more Democrats did not support this commonsense measure to prevent foreign interference in our elections and ensure they remain free, fair and secure.”

In November, Malliotakis joined local officials in sounding the alarm on the city’s scheme to potentially register tens of thousands of migrants residing at shelters to vote after a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request revealed the city is requiring shelter contractors to distribute voter registration cards, assist migrants in registering to vote, and promote campaign material within the shelters themselves.
