Washington, DC — On June 2nd, Rep Oye is set to declare that DC is in a state of healthcare emergency at Ward 7’s Health Alliance Network Meeting at 12 noon at Dorothy Height/ Benning Neighborhood library (located at 3935 Benning Rd NE). As DC’s only elected healthcare worker, Dr. Oye is making this bold announcement following Mayor Bowser’s proposed cuts to Medicaid. This includes cutting 25,000 people from Medicaid, kicking adults 21+ off DC Health Alliance and potential cuts to health provider reimbursement rates. June 2nd’s declaration is part of Rep Oye’s commitment to improving DC’s public health.
Rep Oye says “Today’s declaration is a step to seek funds in order to protect DC’s marginalized communities. Cutting 25,000 low income DC residents off of their insurance is disastrous. This will cripple people financially, cause increased displacement and exacerbate current health disparities. My goal as DC’s Representative and licensed pharmacist is to ensure DC Medicaid is restored to current levels and ensure healthcare remains a human right, and not a privilege.”
