In a remarkable leap forward, Al Khobar, a vibrant seaside town in Saudi Arabia, has been named the world’s most-improved town in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) annual Global Livability Survey. Soaring 13 places to rank 135th among 173 cities worldwide, Khobar’s transformation is a shining example of the ambitious reforms driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 initiative.

Nestled along the serene shores of Half Moon Bay, Khobar has undergone significant advancements in key areas such as health care and education, fueled by substantial investments aimed at diversifying the Kingdom’s economy. These improvements have elevated the quality of life for residents, positioning the town as a standout in the EIU’s rigorous assessment of living conditions.

The EIU’s survey, widely used by multinational companies to determine hardship allowances for relocated staff, evaluates cities across five critical categories: health care, culture and environment, education, infrastructure, and stability. Khobar’s climb in the rankings reflects its rapid progress in creating a more livable and dynamic urban environment. While it still has a way to go to rival global leaders like Copenhagen, which holds a top spot, Khobar’s trajectory is undeniably upward.

In the broader regional context, Khobar outshone its Gulf neighbors, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai securing respectable positions at 72nd and 75th, respectively. However, Khobar’s meteoric rise underscores its unique momentum, driven by Vision 2030’s focus on fostering sustainable growth and enhancing public services.

From improved medical facilities to enriched educational opportunities, Khobar is redefining itself as a hub of progress in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. As the Kingdom continues to invest in its towns and cities, Khobar’s transformation serves as an inspiring testament to the power of strategic vision and bold execution.

With only 134 spots left to challenge the likes of Copenhagen, Khobar’s journey is one to watch. For now, this coastal gem is basking in its well-earned title as the world’s most-improved town—a beacon of possibility in the heart of the Arabian Gulf.
