With the UAE’s and Sultan Al Jaber’s leadership, the world will be in much better shape

The United Arab Emirates has kicked off the COP28 Climate Change Conference under the leadership of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. During the opening session with leaders and ministers from 100 countries, he explained the importance of unity, action and multilateralism. The world is truly stronger when it works together to solve our greatest climate challenges to benefit future generations.

In a recent Economist article, Sultan Al Jaber explained that the world needs to see the required trillions of dollars as a huge investment opportunity, rather than a burden. He is convinced we can build the financial system that’s needed to sustain a new green economy—if multilateral institutions, governments and the private sector pull in the same direction.

The UAE leads by example in supporting the global climate agenda, with a ministry devoted specifically to climate change and the environment. The UAE’s cabinet has adopted the groundbreaking National Climate Change Plan, including the green economy, energy sources diversification policy, renewable and clean energy, promoting energy efficiency, sustainable transport policy, and sustainable urban planning.

Sultan Al Jaber explains that the UAE has grown and diversified its economy, creating knowledge, skills, and jobs for its young people, while contributing practical solutions to a global problem that affects us all. He says this is essential because climate change is the most global of all problems.

His vision addresses the challenge of cutting carbon emissions by 43% by 2030, reducing emissions by 22 gigatons. The only way to do that is to focus on renewables and energy efficiency and the swift decarbonisation of today’s system. He underscores the importance of underwriting investments for the poorest and most vulnerable communities that need the greatest help. He developed an Action Agenda to share with the COP28 delegates and the world, designed to achieve these commendable goals.

These next two weeks in Dubai will provide the opportunity for the world to unite in these common and urgent goals. With the UAE’s and Sultan Al Jaber’s leadership, the world will be in much better shape for generations to come.
