PRESS STATEMENT.

UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE OYE OWOLEWA ON JEANINE PIRRO’S COMMENTS
REGARDING THE SECOND CHANCE AMENDMENT ACT.

WASHINGTON,D.C. —Today U.S. RepresentativeDr.Oye Owolewa(D-D.C.) issued the following statement regarding Jeanine Pirro’s recent comments on the Second Chance Amendment Act:

Let me be clear: second chances save lives.

While lack now ledge interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s right to express concerns, her recent remarks about the Second Chance Amendment Act are out of touch with the lived reality of thousands of D.C. residents. Her framing ignores the daily strugglesof people trying to overcome past mistakes and create better futures, not just for themselves, but for their families and communities.

We don’t strengthen public safety by locking people out of opportunity. We do it by giving them tools to thrive. The idea that seal in gold records some how undermines justice is not only misleading, it’s dangerous.

At our expungement clinics, we meet fathers who want to provide, students eager to start careers, and neighborstrying to move forward. This law isn’t about erasing the past. It’s about building a future where redemption is possible.

If we’re serious about healing our communities and making D.C. safer, then we must support reforms that meet people where they areand liftthem up, not tear them down
