Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced at 5:41 PM UAE time that numerous members of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, National Guard, Border Guard, and civilians had returned home after years in captivity. Many of those freed had been held since 2022, including journalist Dmytro Khyliuk, abducted in the Kyiv region in March of that year. “He has finally returned to his homeland, Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the emotional weight of the reunions. The Ukrainian leader attributed the success to the relentless efforts of Ukraine’s negotiation team, the contributions of its fighters in bolstering the “exchange fund,” and the support of international partners, specifically thanking the UAE for its pivotal role.
On the Russian side, the Ministry of Defense confirmed the release of 146 Russian soldiers from Ukrainian captivity, with an equal number of Ukrainian prisoners of war handed over in return. The ministry acknowledged the UAE’s role as a humanitarian mediator, underscoring the Emirates’ impartiality in ensuring the operation’s success.
